When Is National Donut Day?

National Donut Day is the first Friday in June, and it falls on June 7 this year. Another donut holiday happens in November. However, the one in June has a clearer history — and the best deals.

How Did Donut Day Begin?

During World War I, the Salvation Army employed volunteers known as "dough lassies," who served donuts to the soldiers. The organization's Chicago branch started National Donut Day as a fundraiser in 1938. It was meant to assist those in need during the Great Depression, as well as honor these women's contributions.

Doughnut or Donut?

Sorry, grammar enthusiasts — both versions of the word are acceptable and in use (much like regardless and irregardless). The word "doughnut" came first, popping up around 1809. The "donut" spelling, on the other hand, has been in use since 1870, and it became popular in the 1920s.

Where to Find Deals on National Donut Day

Cumberland Farms
Between 5 am and 10 am on Friday morning, purchase a dispensed beverage and receive a free donut. Choose from flavors including Jelly Filled, Cocoa Hazelnut Filled, Cookies & Cream, Blueberry, and classic Glazed. Note that this offer is only available at newly remodeled locations in the Northeast and Florida.

Daylight Donuts
Swing by a participating location and treat yourself to a free donut. Details are vague, so call ahead or check out the social media for your nearest store before heading out.

The Donut Experiment
The Donut Experiment is a tiny chain, but if you're lucky enough to be near one, you could score a free donut today. Find your nearest location here and swing by for your treat! It appears the flavor on offer might be cinnamon sugar, but the company notes that prices and participation may vary by location, so call ahead!

Doughnut Plant
Stop by for a free mini carnival sprinkle doughnut with any purchase, while supplies last.

Duck Donuts
Swing by your nearest location and treat yourself to a free donut, with no purchase necessary. Choose from Bare, Cinnamon Sugar, or Powdered Sugar.

Duffy's Sports Grill
Plan a lunch or dinner outing and receive free red velvet mini donuts when you purchase two meals.

Dunkin'
Score a free donut with the purchase of any beverage on Friday, while supplies last.

Entenmann's
The baked goods brand doesn't tend to offer freebies, but it's hosting a contest again in 2019. Head to its website to participate in the Fan Flavor Challenge. The winner will receive $5,000 and free donuts for a year! Additionally, there's a chance the winning donut will be made by Entenmann's and sold in stores.

Factory Donuts
This chain is using National Donut Day to kick off its new series of Signature Cream Topped Donuts. Swing by to try the Cannoli Cream Donut for free, and then keep an eye out — according to their Instagram, six more flavors will be rolling out tomorrow!

Honey Dew Donuts
Participating stores are offering a free donut with any medium beverage purchase today. It's limited to one per customer, so you won't be able to stock up for your friends.

Krispy Kreme
This donut chain routinely offers customers a free donut for National Donut Day. It's bringing that promotion back for 2019, and once again, no purchase will be necessary to snag your favorite holey treat. Additionally, Krispy Kreme wants to give away 1 million donuts, and if that happens, it'll host another giveaway later this month featuring their next new donut. Tell everyone you know to grab a freebie now for the chance to score more freebies later!

Kwik Trip

Sugar Shack Donuts
Live near a Sugar Shack? Nurses and those with a military ID can swing by for a free donut today. It seems there's no purchase necessary, although they ask that you remain patient and understanding as there's a good chance they'll run low. (They say they'll keep making more as fast as they're able.)

Voodoo Doughnut
These aren't free, but they're definitely cheap! Swing by for a Homer for only $1 all day today! The Homer is a raised ring donut dipped in strawberry frosting and then finished off with colorful round sprinkles.

Walmart
Heading out to grocery shop at Walmart today? Stop by the bakery and treat yourself to a free donut while supplies last. The big-box chain plans to hand out 1.2 million donuts from the bakeries of any Walmart Supercenter or Neighborhood Market.
