Which Stores Are Open on Memorial Day 2024?

Expect most retailers to be open, but at least one big name will close its doors for the holiday.

We're mere weeks away from Memorial Day, which falls on May 27 this year. While ostensibly a day to commemorate those who have died in military service, it's also an opportunity to shop a lot of sales, discounts, and price lowerings of various descriptions. Last year, sales began cropping up as much as 17 days early, so you can expect to spend the majority of the rest of May observing these sales in action.

But of course, this is DealNews, the land of online deals — what of actual physical stores? Will they be open on the day itself? The answers are as varied and numerous as the stores themselves, and so we'll endeavor to give a thorough, if not exhaustive, overview of the big hitters. Memorial Day: ACTIVATE.

Memorial Day 2024 vs. Memorial Day 2023

Our predictions for Memorial Day are observable via our 2024 Memorial Day sales guide, courtesy of the estimable J. Ramhold. They include the following:

  • Up to 85% off apparel, shoes, and accessories
  • Hundreds off new mattresses
  • Major appliances at up to 35% off or more
  • Up to 90% off home furniture and decor
  • Outdoor items at up to half off

How does that compare to last year's sales? Looking back to 2023, the big hitters were stores like Amazon, Home Depot, and Best Buy. Home Depot offered discounts that included up to 55% off furniture, and up to 30% off washers and dryers, while Best Buy offered up to 40% off washers and dryers, with a $50 gift card if you spent $1,499 or more. eBay ran a coupon that took 15% off sitewide, Walmart discounted thousands of items, and Sam's Club offered its members over $6,200 in savings. We can expect to see much the same this year, with other stores also returning to the fray. Look for them to include Lowe's, Macy's, and Under Armour.

What's Open on Memorial Day?

The good news — for shoppers, if not retail staff — is that most stores will be open on Memorial Day 2024, although they may operate on reduced hours. Grocery stores, warehouse clubs, and retail stores all want your Memorial Day sale dollar, and so must make their wares available. Note that your local store's hours may differ slightly from the standard, but broadly, you can expect the following.

Look for Walmart, Target, and Whole Foods to run their regular hours, while Sam's Club will open as normal and close early at 6 pm. You can also expect Best Buy, Bloomingdale's, Home Depot, Lowe's, Kohl's, and Macy's to open for a normal shopping day. Sephora will run regular hours, as will Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, and Ace Hardware.

Is Target Open?

Target will open from 8 am to 10 pm, its normal operating hours, for Memorial Day 2024. It does the same for the majority of holidays throughout the year, as colleague N. Gosker notes in our comprehensive guide to Target's holiday hours.

Is Walmart Open?

Walmart, likewise, sees Memorial Day as no different to any other day — open at 6 am, close at 11 pm, sell a vast quantity of items in between. For more on the retailer's schedule, read the venerable J. Ramhold's look at the Walmart holiday hours.

Is Costco Open?

Costco stands apart from most stores, closing its doors to the public for Memorial Day. The handsome A. Byrne (me) took a deeper look at Costco's holiday hours and came away convinced that they stay closed for several of the year's major holidays. To which we say: good for you.

Is Kohl's Open?

Kohl's opens from 9 am to 10 pm. I know your burning question: are those their regular hours? And I even know your follow-up question: is there some easy way for me to find out if they open for similar hours for the rest of the year's holidays? The answer to both: yes. Check our our guide to Kohl's holiday hours here to learn more.

Is Lowe's Open?

If I said "6 am to 10 pm," would you guess that I was talking about Lowe's Memorial Day opening hours? Because I would be. They keep similar hours throughout the 2024 holiday schedule, as you can easily check in our Lowe's holiday hours guide.

Are Banks Open on Memorial Day?

Banks are the Costco of the financial field, we've always said. This is mostly in reference to the fact that they're both closed for Memorial Day, but we're sure there are other similarities. Neither likes you hanging around the premises unless you're a member, for one.

What's Closed on Memorial Day?

Standing alone among notable retailers, Costco will close its doors for Memorial Day, with nary a thought given to joining the pack. Instead, it lines up alongside post offices, USPS, UPS and FedEx offices, and banks in remaining closed for the holiday.

What Else Should I Consider When Shopping on Memorial Day?

Keep in mind on Memorial Day that online shopping exists, and can happily supplant using your legs, arms, and eyes to shop in-store for most things. And many of the online Memorial Day sales usually kick off pretty early — around a week before the day itself. But we'd wager we'll see preview sales and such go live before that. For a full accounting of our expectations, we'll again prompt you to read our Memorial Day sale predictions.

As we await the influx of Memorial Day sales, you can busy yourself by subscribing to the DealNews Select newsletter, creating your very own deal alerts, and checking out our Facebook and TikTok pages. Not only will they keep you abreast of the current best deals available, they'll also deliver all the best Memorial Day discounts directly to you as they go live.
