Practically every network has its own streaming service now, which can add up quickly if you're subscribing to all of them. But a good way to test some out before you go all-in is by taking advantage of special promotions that offer discounted rates for a short time. That way you can explore a service's lineup to decide if it's worth the full cost.

While many services will offer different types of specials to draw in new customers, we'll be talking about Starz with this writing. Some readers may equate the network with period dramas and other types of very serious content, but the streaming service offers much more than you might think. Read on for how to try out Starz for less with its semi-annual plan to see if it's worth adding to your streaming services roundup.

What Is the Starz Semi-Annual Plan?

Store: Starz
Price: $20

Considering you'd spend at least $45.99 ordinarily to get six months of Starz, this is an excellent deal that saves you 57% when testing out the lineup. Remember that after your six-month promotion period is up, your subscription will auto-renew at the regular price, so set a reminder to cancel beforehand if you're on the fence.

Other Starz Deals

Starz 3-Month Streaming Subscription for $3 per month: If you want something with less of a commitment and a cheaper price to boot, you can get three months of Starz for just $9 overall. Then, if you end up liking it, you can keep it when auto-renews at the regular monthly rate.

How to Sign Up for Starz

Redeeming the offer for the Starz semi-annual plan is relatively easy. Here are the steps you'll need to take:

  1. Visit the Starz website.
  2. Select the Semi-Annual Plan offer.
  3. Click "Claim Special Offer".
  4. Enter your email to create your account.
  5. Provide your payment information.
  6. Click "Subscribe", and you're ready to start streaming!
Once the promotion period is up, your subscription will auto-renew at the regular monthly rate of $9.99, so keep that in mind when signing up for this offer.

Does Starz Have a Free Trial?

Unfortunately, Starz itself doesn't offer a free trial. However, if you're already subscribing to something like Amazon Prime or Hulu, then you may be able to get a free 7-day trial of the service through your subscription. However, given that it's only a week, you'll have to do some serious bingeing in order to determine if it's worth it.

How to Watch Starz for Free

As mentioned above, there isn't a free trial for the service from Starz itself, but you may be able to get a 7-day free trial through services like Amazon Prime and Hulu. Remember that if you add these services onto your existing subscriptions, you won't be saving any money — Starz will cost you $9.99 per month regularly no matter how you join for the long term.

What Is on Starz?

Like any other streaming service, the lineup will change periodically outside of originals from Starz itself. In general, you can count on things like The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Party Down, and Outlander. Of course there will be movies and shows from other providers on tap as well, but again, those will change based on licensing rights.

How Much Is Starz Normally?

If you're subscribing to Starz outside of a special offer, you can expect to pay $9.99 per month as of this writing. And that's true if you're subscribing straight through Starz or adding it on to an existing subscription like Hulu, Amazon Prime, or something else entirely.

What Is Included With Starz?

With a Starz subscription you'll receive access to original series, as well as popular movies and TV shows. You'll also be able to take advantage of unlimited streaming and downloads, plus stream on up to four screens at the same time.

How Does Starz Compare to Others?

Starz vs. Max

Max is the streaming service of HBO. It's $9.99 per month with ads, though there are two other tiers as well: Ad-free at $16.99 per month and Ultimate Ad-Free at $20.99 per month.

The basic tier of Max is the closest price-wise to what you'll find with Starz, but Max only offers two streams at a time and full HD resolution with no option for downloading to watch later. Max will of course offer its own original series, as well as a rotating lineup of movies and other TV shows, so even though you may feel like you get less for the price, it could still be a better fit if you're more interested in what Max produces rather than what Starz offers content-wise.

Starz vs. Amazon Prime Video

Considering that you can add Starz to your Prime Video account, it's a bit weird to try to compare the two. As with other streaming services, Amazon Prime Video will have its own series, as well as a rotation of movies and TV shows of various qualities and relevance. However, unless you already have an Amazon Prime account you use for in general, you're not really gaining anything by adding Starz to it. It's the same cost at $9.99 per month, and you may not even be able to get a free trial — it just depends on what Starz wants to offer. For example, at the time of this writing, Amazon Prime subscribers could get the first three months of Starz for just $1.99 per month, and after that the regular price would kick in.

While it used to be relatively easy to sign up for just a Prime Video account at $8.99 per month, it seems like it might be a bit more tedious to do so now. Users online have reported having to contact customer service for help and having to cancel your current Prime plan (if you have one), signing out of your Amazon, then navigating to the Prime Video homepage. From there, you'll have to hover over your account at the top right, click "Account & Settings", and then you should be able to see the Prime Membership options. If you click on a link there, you should be able to sign up for Prime Video alone rather than an entire Prime membership. That's a lot of steps to go through to try to get a Prime Video membership to then try to add Starz to (which there's no guarantee you'll be able to) only to end up paying more than if you just went through Starz itself.

If you'd rather not jump through those many, many hoops, then you could opt for paying $14.99 per month or $139 per year for a full Prime sub. All that said, if you're not already an Amazon Prime member, you're much better off just grabbing Starz on its own.

Starz vs. Peacock

Peacock is NBC's streaming service, and because of that, users can stream things like live sports and events as well as current NBC and Bravo shows, original series, popular movies, and TV shows. There are two tiers to choose from: the Premium membership for $5.99 per month and the Premium Plus for $11.99 per month.

Since Peacock's Premium membership offers access to live TV and a cheaper price than a Starz membership, it seems easy to note the winner. But ultimately it comes down to the choice of content and which one appeals to you more. If you're likely to prefer more Starz originals than Peacock originals, the $9.99 per month will be more worth it to you.

Starz vs. Netflix

Netflix is the OG of streaming services, so when comparing any newer subscriptions, of course you'll want to consider it too. Netflix may have also started the originals trend, honestly, but either way, it's going to function much like any other streaming service these days: original productions, and a rotating lineup of movies and TV shows. Once again, you'll want to investigate what the offerings are to see if there's anything interesting enough for you to subscribe to.

There are three tiers of memberships: the Standard with ads for $6.99 per month, the Standard for $15.49 per month, and the Premium for $22.99 per month. Netflix is also notorious for increasing prices every few years, so it's sure to raise them again, probably in the near future. The lower two tiers of membership offer two streams at a time, as well as two download devices, while the highest tier offers up to four streams at a time and six download devices.

If you don't mind ads, the basic Netflix tier is a better deal than Starz, though it's unclear for how long. But if you want to skip the ads, you'll pay more for the privilege with Netflix than you would with Starz. At least with the special offers, Starz claims to have ad-free streaming, so you may be able to maximize your viewing with the semi-annual plan rather than having to sit through ads on Starz programming.

Ultimately, choosing the right streaming service will come down to your personal tastes and preferences for the kinds of programming you want to spend your time watching. At least with the Starz semi-annual plan, you'll have six months to test out the network's lineup and decide if it's worth keeping around or not.
