Did you know that famed streaming service Hulu only ever launched in one other country outside of the USA? That country was none other than Japan and the year was 2011. Three years later however, acquisitions lead to Hulu's Japanese branch being no more. Today, Hulu exists only in American form and is owned by the all-consuming Walt Disney Company.

Brief corporate history lessons are, however, not why we're here; so what of the student discounts? Instead of paying $7.99 per month, students can pay significantly less. How much less? How does one go about acquiring this deal? The answers to all these questions and more lie ahead, just an eye glance below. Onwards, to glancing and a resulting discount.

How To Save 75% With the Hulu Student Discount FAQs

How Much Is Hulu With the Student Discount?

The Hulu (with ads) monthly subscription normally costs $7.99. With the generous 75% off student discount though, it gets reduced to a mere $1.99 per month. It should be noted that the discount is sadly only available for the ad plan so if you have an exceptionally strong aversion to commercial interruption, be aware. Otherwise, $2 a month for the entire core Hulu library is very much what we would call DealNews™️.

How Do You Sign Up for the Discount?

In order to take advantage of Hulu's 75% off discount for students, you will need to be a student. There's absolutely no getting around this requirement because your student status will be confirmed using the standard method of doing so via SheerID. If you are a student, you can head to this area of the Hulu website to begin the process.

What Types of Membership Tiers Are Offered?

Hulu offers several different varieties of membership. The cheapest of them starts at $7.99 with ads or alternatively $17.99 without ads. You can also sign up for bundles that include Disney+ or the likes of live viewing in the form of ESPN+, with prices varying based on what is part of your chosen bundle. However, only the base Hulu plan with ads is available with any kind of student discount so if your heart is set on that, there's only one plan for you.

Which Account Levels Have Ads?

There's a few different account levels that have ads on Hulu; however, for our purposes right here and right now we're only concerned with the single plan that supports Hulu's considerable 75% off discount. Since that's the case, this one does indeed have ads. Brace for commercial interruption!

Can an Account Be Shared With Family?

This is most succinctly answered on the Hulu page entitled: "Who can I share my Hulu subscription with?"

"You may not share your subscription outside of your household. 'Household' means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein."

Well then. A firm and straightforward answer directly from the horse's mouth.

Can You Add Someone to Your Account?

You can't add someone to your account if they exist outside of your household. If they're part of the same household however, you can create up to seven viewing profiles for convenient streaming with up to two concurrent streams. How you go about doing this depends on which device you're using. Stand by for instructions.

On Hulu.com

  1. Hover over the name in the top right corner of the page and click manage profiles.
  2. Click add profile.
  3. Fill out the required fields, then click create profile.

On a mobile device

  1. Tap the account icon.
  2. Select your name to open the profiles page.
  3. Tap the new profile.
  4. Fill out the required information and then tap the create profile button.

On a TV-connected device

  1. Select the new profile from the profiles screen when you first open the app.
  2. If you're already in the app, go to account > profiles > new profile.
  3. Enter the required information and then select create profile.

Can You Change Your Plan?

You can indeed change your plan. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Hulu account settings page.
  2. Select "manage plan". Your current plan will be highlighted in green.
  3. To switch to a different plan, toggle the plan you want from off to on.

If you're already on a plan and want to change it to receive the student discount on the ad-supported tier, this should be possible as the small print on Hulu's student discount page states that the offer is "valid for new and existing Hulu-billed subscribers."

Is There a Trial?

There is indeed a trial for Hulu. You can get 30 days for free on the base ad-supported tier. You'll be charged for your chosen plan at the end of trial so be sure to cancel it before then, if you aren't planning on sticking with it.
