The First Black Friday Ad Has Arrived! And It's for a... Snow Globe?!

Published

Every year at DealNews, we eagerly await the first Black Friday ad of the season. Will a big Black Friday juggernaut like Best Buy be the first to leak its Black Friday circular, or will a little retailer with big dreams get in on the game early? Can the anticipated deals possibly live up to our very lofty expectations?! So many questions!

Last year's debut Black Friday ad from Sprint seemed to be a genuine leaked ad, perhaps snapped by an employee with a camera phone. But this year's honor of first Black Friday ad goes to JCPenney, which kicked the Black Friday shopping season off with a teaser announcement for a titillating deal on a... snow globe.

Over the weekend, JCPenney announced that in-store shoppers will receive a free snow globe this Black Friday, clearly another brilliant ploy to lure shoppers offline and into brick-and-mortar locations. To be fair, this promo is a return to tradition, as JCPenney has a long-standing history of handing out annual snow globes during the holidays. Many customers apparently look forward to the freebie, and the store created quite the controversy last year when it opted to hand out buttons instead. Although JCPenney has yet to note specific details about how to qualify for the freebie, it seems as if Team Snow Globe has won.

While technically the first Black Friday ad, we're hesitant to deem JCPenney's snow globe freebie a sign of what's to come this Black Friday season. That said, it is (at the very least) the best deal we've seen for a holiday-themed Mickey Mouse snow globe so far this year. For perhaps a slightly more exciting preview of 2013 Black Friday deals, check out our Black Friday predictions on all kinds of consumer goods. Lamentably we neglected to address price trends for snow globes, but hopefully all the details about TVs, laptops, and Apple products will suffice.
