Best Time to Buy: Valentine’s Day Gifts

By Aaron Crowe, dealnews writer

On certain holidays, you really don't want to be caught short without a gift, no matter what your significant other says about not needing one. At the top of that list should be Valentine's Day. Even if you think it's merely a greeting-card-created holiday, or even if you express your love on a daily basis and don't need a holiday to show it, the person you love wants something special from you to show that you care — and that you remembered.

Valentine's Day is less than a week away, so before you forget to circle Feb. 14 on your calendar, here are some gifts to help you save some money and look like a sweetheart. If you act fast enough, you might be able to get them by Feb. 14 and save some money on shipping.

A Dozen Red Roses
For $29.99, 1-800-flowers.com will sell you a bouquet of a dozen red roses. Yes, it's a cliché Valentine's Day gift to buy, but it's the perfect gift to express your love. Note that the $29.99 is for the flowers only and is $15 off the regular price. Shipping and handling charges start at $12.99, which still makes it the lowest total price we could find by $10. Valentine's Day delivery costs an extra $4.99 and Saturday delivery is $14.99.

15 Sweetheart Tulips
If you want to get away from the roses cliché, try something different, ProFlowers.com is selling 15 Sweetheart Tulips and a free glass ginger vase, for $19.99 with shipping costs of $11.62. It's $10 off and is the lowest total price we could find. Act fast — the deal ends Feb. 10.

Godiva is having a sale of up to 60% off select chocolate and gifts, making it the best discount we've seen from Godiva in months. A 60-piece tin of assorted flavors that normally sells for $45 is $26.99. Shipping starts at $6.95.

Just getting a small box from Tiffany & Co. should set her heart beating quickly. While this isn't a deal for a discount on a diamond or other items at the famed jeweler, Tiffany & Co. is offering free shipping on all items ordered online, with no minimum purchase required. It's the first free shipping offer we've seen from Tiffany this year. Gifts start at $15. For delivery by Valentine's Day, order by noon ET on Feb. 12.

If Tiffany isn't in your budget, there are plenty of other places to find jewelry. Kohl's, for example, is have a 65% off sale on a selection of jewelry, including a pair of Croft & Barrow Twisted Oval-Hoop Earrings for $5.52. Orders over $50 get free shipping with code "HOME50FREE." Otherwise, shipping is 99 cents per item. It's one of the best discounts we've seen on jewelry.
