When Do 4th of July Sales Start?

Independence Day sales appear far in advance of July 4, just like how promotions show up early for other holidays. Last year, the first July 4th sale we saw came from Kohl's on June 8. The store offered discounts on 4th of July decor, plus kitchen and bath items.

After the Kohl's event, one of the first "real" sales we saw came from Lowe's. The home improvement retailer's promotion kicked off around June 23 and provided savings on more than 30,000 items.

Early sales for major holidays often start popping up around two weeks or so before the day itself. These first events may not be that notable, and some may only have a small selection of goods to shop, but it's still smart to keep an eye out for bargains.

You might not think Independence Day sales would yield strong deals on electronics, but you'd be wrong! We tend to see quite a few promotions from popular retailers, with the very best savings reaching as high as 70% off.

Look to stores like Best Buy for solid 4th of July deals on a wide variety of tech, photography, SSDs, monitors, laptops, TVs, phones, smart devices, and other items. Another great option will be Harman Audio, as its July 4th sale could include discounts on portable speakers, headphones, and even home theater setups.

In the market for a new computer? Then watch for Dell to once again offer up to 55% off desktops, laptops, and other products, while HP could knock up to 68% off select gaming items like they did last year.

Clothing sales make up a large part of the July 4th sales every year, and this year should be no exception. Early sales may feature more middle-of-the-road discounts, with stores like Kohl's taking 20% off select swimwear, and Eddie Bauer cutting 50% off.

Interested in designer goods? July 4th is a good time to watch for sales on these items. Last year, Michael Kors took up to 60% off, plus offered an extra 20% off via a promo code. J.Crew Factory had their own event and took 40% to 70% off sitewide, while Nordstrom Rack knocked up to 70% off and Lucky Brand cut up to 50% off.

Early 4th of July clothing sales may offer middle-of-the-road discounts, with stores taking up to 50% or 60% off.

The 4th of July is also an ideal time to shop for shoes, regardless of which kinds you need. Clarks could once again knock up to 50% off in its Red, White, and Shoes Sale. Crocs, meanwhile, could cut up to 50% off plus an extra 15% off for its 4th of July sale, and Teva could take up to 40% off, with prices starting at just $15.

Note that retailers could offer early sales that are eclipsed by better deals closer to the holiday. Historically, we've seen discounts like up to 60% off at department stores early on, but closer to the holiday itself, savings can reach up to 90% off. Similarly, we've seen retailers offer 30% off sitewide in late June, only for the discount to increase to 40% off a day later.

It'll be a balancing act to determine if you should buy early or wait a couple of days to see if the discounts get better, so take some time to consider your purchase before adding to cart. Some stores could offer you price adjustments, especially if steeper discounts arrive a short time later, but don't count on those for savings.

While summer isn't quite winding down around July 4th, it may be in the beginning stages of that process. That may explain why the holiday brings patio furniture deals that are worth checking out.

Most of the time we advise waiting until August to purchase these seasonal items, as that's when retailers start to clear out their stock of summer gear. However, July 4th offers a sweet spot where you can find notable bargains and still have plenty of warm weather left to enjoy using these kinds of products.

Watch for eBay to take up to 60% off select patio items, plus they could once again offer an extra 20% off certain purchases. And Kohl's could also feature great savings on patio furniture in their Sonoma Goods For Life line. Last year they knocked 30% to 40% off plus an extra 20% off during their patio sale at the end of June. However, the store upped the discounts to 50% to 60% off just a few days later for July 4.

It's not just patio furniture we'll see discounts on either. July 4th sales are a good opportunity to look for savings on grills, as well. Last year, we saw discounts like up to 20% off grills and accessories at Lowe's, while Home Depot took up to $80 off the same categories. These won't be the only grilling offers that pop up, so it's worth looking at other retailers you might not normally consider for these purchases, as well.

Whether you're looking for new hiking accessories, comfortable clothing for the great outdoors, or sporting goods, know that July 4th sales have discounts you'll want to see. Watch for Dick's Sporting Goods to cut up to 60% off clearance items, REI to knock up to 40% off big brands, and Woot to cut up to 79% off sports and outdoor items.

Major appliances are one of the big-ticket categories that often see discounts during July 4th sales. Lowe's, Home Depot, and Best Buy will be standard places to look for 4th of July appliance sales, but keep other retailers in mind, too, and even manufacturers. For example, last year IKEA took 20% off select kitchen appliances, while Samsung knocked up to 38% off select washers and dryers.

Home improvement stores and warehouse clubs are good places to look for 4th of July appliance sales.

Warehouse clubs may also provide decent savings. If you're a member of Sam's Club or Costco, watch for them to offer as much as thousands off select appliances during their July 4th sales.

Mattresses are another huge item found in July 4th sales, and some unexpected retailers may get in on the action. For example, we've seen Home Depot take up to 46% off mattresses around the holiday, and department stores like Macy's and JCPenney could take up to 60% off in 2023. Watch for online retailers like Casper and Purple to feature mattress deals that take hundreds off select styles, while warehouse clubs could offer certain models for $1,000 off or more.
