What are the steps to becoming eligible for the Home Depot military discount?

While there are no physical steps leading to this discount that you could scale like Rocky Balboa, jumping around at the top while Home Depot store assistants toss vouchers at you, there are some proverbial steps you need to take to qualify. First of all, you'll need to head over to Home Depot's military discount registration page. There, you'll see a prompt to "Register Now" via SheerID. Registering via SheerID requires you to choose your status (active duty, Gold Star family, military reserves, or veteran) and your branch of service. The discount is available to members of any of the following branches:

  • Army
  • Navy
  • Air Force
  • Marine Corps
  • Coast Guard
  • Space Force
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS)
  • National Guard

You can also register as a spouse of an eligible member who is currently enrolled to get military discounts at Home Depot.

We said "first of all", but: surprise! This was the only step. Now you're fully verified, and they'll never need you to verify your identity again – the SheerID account will do all that for you. All that's left is to inform you of the notable exclusions from eligibility: dishonorably discharged veterans, and dependents of military members. Get outta here.

Are Home Depot military discounts available both online and in-store?

Oh my, yes. The SheerID verification should pair with your Home Depot account to see the discount applied automatically to any eligible online purchases at checkout. For an in-store purchase, you can scan your Virtual ID on the Home Depot mobile app at checkout to get any eligible discounts. You can save up to a maximum of $400 per calendar year.

Are military discounts stackable?

In line with discounts from stores like Lowe's and Best Buy, Home Depot notes that "value priced merchandise" is excluded from military discounts (along with other items, like appliances, lumber, wire, building materials, and more), and that the discount "cannot be combined with other promotions". So expect no stacking, and if something happens to automatically get the discount in a way you didn't expect, that's just a fun bonus.

What are my payment options?

Anyone looking to redeem a Home Depot military discount in 2024 is presumably familiar with the concept of money. But just in case, here are some ways you can pay for your Home Depot online order:

  • Home Depot Consumer Card: This store card comes with perks including six months of special financing on purchases of $299 or more (with no interest, so long as it's paid off within that period), and a year-long return window on purchases.
  • Home Depot ProXtra Commercial Card: For professional customers, this card allows you to authorize employees to make purchases. Every dollar spent with this card counts as the equivalent of $4 when it comes to earning ProXtra rewards.
  • Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover): The classics. Flexible friends, they called them, in Britain, once. We should bring that back.
  • Home Depot Gift Card / eGift Card: At the perfect halfway point between "cash" and "debit card" is the gift card: an inflexible friend, loaded with a set amount of money to be used at one given store, in this case, the good ship Home Depot.
  • Paypal: An added layer of protection and abstraction between a store's checkout and your bank details. Useful.
  • Propurchase Card: This card is available to members of HDSupply, and can be used to pay for any SKU sold at Home Depot, except gift cards.

In-store, you'll also have the exciting option of paying in cash.

Does my discount ever expire?

So long as your SheerID verification remains intact, your discount should last as long as Home Depot continues to offer it. Just don't go getting dishonorably discharged, basically.

What is the return policy for military discount purchases?

Home Depot's general return policy dictates a 90-day window for most purchases, which – as we said above – extends to a full year for purchases made with a Home Depot store or commercial card. They offer no verbiage to indicate that this changes for items purchased with the military discount. Tally ho.

What other discounts does Home Depot offer?

Home Depot doesn't offer many discount programs, so if you're availing of their military discount, you should feel like you're part of an even more exclusive club. No Home Depot first responder discount, no senior discount, no student discount. They don't offer an employee discount either, per se, but it's the closest they come, instead offering their workers discounts on things like gym memberships, TV and computer purchases, meal kits and groceries, and more.

What else should I consider when shopping Home Depot military discounts?

One thing to consider is our previous mention of appliances being excluded from the military discount program. This is broadly true, but there's a "But". You can use ShopMyExchange to get special military pricing and tax-free purchases.

We'll point out that shopping online has benefits, like easier price comparisons with other stores, and not having to leave your couch. You can opt for in-store pickup if you want to avoid paying for shipping, but orders of $35 or more get free shipping anyhow.

Beyond that, the only thing to consider is signing up for a DealNews deal alert on any item you might want to buy from Home Depot. Or perhaps signing up for the DealNews Select newsletter, to get a sampling of our finest deals every day. Our Staff Picks page also presents the best of the best to you, with what we're assured is an hilarious roundup to "highlight the highlights". All that's left is to enjoy using Home Depot's military discount in 2024 and beyond.
