You may not think there's a "right" time of year to buy power tools, but like with other products, there are optimal times to shop. That means there are also times when you shouldn't be looking for these items, unless you just need one of them ASAP.

Check out our guide for the best times of year to buy power tools, including select holidays and certain months. They'll give you the biggest chance to save!

What's the Best Time to Buy Power Tools?

January

Coming on the heels of the winter holidays, January might not seem like it would have a ton of deals to look forward to, but the truth is the first month of the year is a good time to buy power tools. We listed roughly the same number of deals in January 2022 as in February and April, but we had far more Staff Picks in January. In fact, about 27% of all the power tool deals we listed that month earned our "best of the best" designation.

Prices can drop super low for power tool accessories in January — here's a sampling of what you can expect:

  • Around $3 for a socket adapter
  • Around $7 for an adapter set
  • $8 for a drill bit set
  • $15 for a saw blade set

When it comes to actual power tools, watch for items like Worx electric scissors to be priced around $30. When we saw that deal in January 2022, it was so good it earned our Staff Pick badge. And if you're looking for sales, be sure to check out Amazon, which could take up to 56% off select power tools, while eBay could knock up to 50% off.

During Presidents' Day Sales

Presidents' Day is a shopping-friendly holiday that tends to revolve around big-ticket items like mattresses and large appliances — including washers and dryers — as well as electronics like laptops. However, it can also be an excellent time to shop for power tools.

Sites like eBay offer deals on certified refurbished products around this time. In February 2022, for instance, the company knocked up to 50% off certified refurbished Bosch tools. Pre–Presidents' Day sales at Home Depot, meanwhile, have taken up to $300 off or more on power tools, accessories, and cordless combo kits. (Learn all about cordless vs. corded power tools here.) Check out Ace Hardware, too, as they often discount specific brands around Presidents' Day. In 2022, the retailer cut prices on select DeWalt tools.

March

Maybe it's because March heralds the official beginning of spring and people are ready to jump into DIY home renovations or other projects, but surprisingly, we see a fair amount of tool deals during the third month of the year. In fact, in 2022 we saw more power tool deals in March than during any other month early in the year.

Once again, expect eBay to be one of the best places to buy power tools. In March 2022, they knocked up to 60% off a variety of top brands, including DeWalt and Worx, as well as Sun Joe. They could also cut up to 50% off refurbished Makita tools come March, and up to 60% off certified refurbished outdoor equipment in general. Amazon could also participate in the savings and offer up to 50% off select power tools during this month.

During Father's Day Sales

Tools of any kind are quintessential Father's Day gifts, so it should come as no surprise that they feature heavily in sales around the holiday. Plenty of retailers offer power tool deals both on Father's Day and in the days leading up to it. Watch for Amazon to have brand-specific savings on DeWalt products, while Northern Tool could feature rebates and special offers, such as a free item with your purchase or up to an extra $20 off.

We saw more power tool deals in March 2022 than during any other month early in the year.

However, one of the biggest retailers to keep an eye on is eBay. The online store will likely offer a ton of different power tool deals throughout the month of June, and quite a few should arrive early enough that you can order gifts for Dad without worry. Watch for eBay to offer up to 50%-60% off certified refurbished power tools in general, or brand-specific discounts like up to 67% off Worx and Rockwell tools.

In addition to eBay, look to stores like Ace Hardware, which could offer up to $200 off brands like DeWalt for Ace Rewards members. Ace Rewards is their loyalty program, FYI, and it's free to join. And don't forget about Lowe's. Last year, the retailer offered a "buy one, get one free" deal on select power tools just a few days before Father's Day.

Black Friday

Black Friday may seem like a weird time to buy power tools, but the shopping holiday can be a solid time to score deals on nearly anything, and tools are no exception. You can expect to see the usual suspects, and for the power tool deals to pop up earlier than Black Friday itself. In 2021, for instance, Black Friday fell on November 26, but we saw offers show up both days and weeks beforehand.

Ace Hardware usually offers brand-specific discounts, such as up to 30% off Craftsman items, with extra savings for Rewards members. Home Depot, on the other hand, will likely offer tool bundles from companies like Milwaukee, Ryobi, and DeWalt for up to $150 off. You can expect eBay to focus on certain brands, as well; it could offer up to 50% off certified refurbished products from the likes of Bosch. Woot! could also have chippers and blowers for up to 50% off, so if you need those, then it's worth checking them out. Be sure to peruse Amazon, too, since they'll likely feature deals like $25 off $100 on Makita products.

In fact, you can expect most Black Friday deals on power tools to probably be brand-specific offers. Lowe's could take up to 35% off Skil power tools and accessories, while eBay may offer another Black Friday Blowout and take up to 70% off Worx and Rockwell power tools to celebrate.

Whenever You Find a Good Deal

While we've listed the times of year that are most likely to have notable power tool deals, know that you can find a great bargain at any time of year. You just have to keep an eye out for these offers to pop up. We realize that can take a lot of time, so we're here to help! Set up a deal alert for the brands and prices you're looking for, and you'll receive a notification when we list an offer that matches those parameters. You can get as specific or broad with your alert as you'd like, too, so don't hesitate to set it up exactly as you want.
