Woman using computer looks like she's thinking.

These days, it's not too hard to find the history of a company, especially if it's a larger business. If you spend time researching, you can learn when and where the company was founded, who started it, and sometimes what causes they support. Fortunately, resources like the ones here make this process easier when you're focused on supporting Black-owned businesses.

Support Black Owned

Support Black Owned is a great place to begin your search, whether you're looking for clothing from Black-owned brands or other items. The site has a directory, and every business in it is meant to be confirmed as Black-owned. In fact, SBO requests that if you come across a listed company that isn't Black-owned, that you let them know so they can inquire about ownership.

Sites like Support Black Owned and Official Black Wall Street offer directories to help you locate Black-owned businesses.

Search the directory by category or state. Alternatively, you can do a phrase/keyword search via the homepage if you have something specific you'd like to find, and can even search by ZIP code from there, as well.

Official Black Wall Street

Similar to SBO, Official Black Wall Street offers a directory to help you find Black-owned businesses. You can search by term, look at categories, and even check locations down to specific states and cities. The site also allows you to toggle either brick-and-mortar or online locations for the stores when you search, so you can figure out the best way to shop.

Official Black Wall Street has a handy app, too. It's available on both Google Play and the App Store.

We Buy Black

We Buy Black is a marketplace that allows consumers to shop Black-owned businesses directly. Several categories are available to purchase from, including clothing and accessories, books, and toys.

Etsy

If you like supporting individual creators, know that Etsy has made it easy by creating a page that features several Black-owned shops. It's an especially great place to shop original jewelry pieces, as well as clothing items and accessories. And since Etsy has a bunch of indie creators, you'll absolutely find items for every budget.

Black Enterprise

Black Enterprise develops lists of Black-owned businesses, including the largest Black-owned businesses in the U.S. They split this list into additional categories, including the Top 100, Auto 40, and Financial Services. The lists provide helpful context, including current rank, previous rank, revenue, the number of employees, the name of the CEO, the type of business, and its location.

Target

The bull's-eye retailer has not been shy about committing to inclusion and diversity, and has even forecast plans to spend more than $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by 2025. So it should come as no surprise that Target makes it easy to shop Black-owned brands on their website now. The Black Beyond Measure page features specific categories, including hair care, beauty, toys and activities, home, grocery, baby and essentials, and pets.

Target's Black Beyond Measure page lets you shop Black-owned brands by category.

That same page also highlights a handful of Black-owned brands, and provides a link to learn more, and another one to "Join Us." Target's "Join Us" page offers links where businesses can apply for Target Accelerators, and where businesses can register with Supplier Diversity so that their items can be sold through the retailer.

Amazon

Shopping Amazon can be daunting at the best of times, but especially when you're trying to search for Black-owned businesses. Fortunately, Amazon influencer Femme Nouveau put together a list of items that includes a variety of products from Black-owned brands, including books, food, and hair care and beauty items. Plus, Amazon itself has a page where you can check out products from Black-owned small businesses. Obviously, if you track down specific products you like outside of Amazon, you can always check the online retailer once you know what you're looking for.

I choose to do business with a company that can satisfy my needs. Period. I could give a rip about skin color. Different strokes I guess. So odd.
