More People Will Buy Apple's Pricier iPhablet Than the iPhone 6

The iPhablet might cost $100 more than the iPhone 6, but our survey shows that it's more popular with shoppers.

iPhone 6

Apple debuted the iPhone 6 last week, and this time around, the standard flagship model is joined by a beefed-up brother, the iPhone 6 Plus. Latching on to the growing phablet trend, the Plus stretches to 5.5" in size, whereas the standard iPhone 6 checks in at 4.7". Apple also supercharged the Plus with a higher-resolution screen and optical image stabilization, among other things.

With better features, the Plus is obviously a higher-end iPhone, but it also comes at a higher starting price: the iPhone 6 is $199 with a 2-year contract or $649 without, while the Plus starts at $299 on contract, $749 without.

Thus, we were curious to know just how many people are actually interested in the pricier model. We asked 1,807 of our readers if they would buy a newly-announced iPhone, and if so, which one. As it turns out, despite the additional cost, more shoppers were interested in buying the Plus; 34.3% of respondents claimed they will buy the iPhablet, whereas only 29.6% will purchase the standard iPhone 6. This supports early reports that the Plus actually sold out in preorders (although that fact alone doesn't definitively prove that the Plus is more popular, since Apple might have produced different amounts for each model).

Given the sales projections for phablets over the past year, this isn't too surprising; phones sized 5.5" and above have cannibalized tablet growth to a sizable degree, and they have slowly gained more market share amongst other smartphones. Still, phablets have only consumed about a fifth of the smartphone market thus far, making the demand for the iPhone 6 Plus surprisingly large.

Readers, what do you think? If you're considering the Plus, why are you opting for the larger phone over the iPhone 6? Sound off in the comments below!

@coachpete327 What about SLIM jeans? Are those still unacceptable?

MacTX i think you would be surprised by how quickly you get use to a larger phone. when i first bought the S3, i thought, this is the biggest phone i will ever buy, there is no need for anything larger. then i bought the LG G3, i folded and went larger. yes, its awkward for one handed use, unless you have a grippy case or large hands. but i am already use to it in my skinny fit jeans pocket.

though, to note, the iphone 6 plus is taller and wider then the G3.

i am in no way saying the G3 is better because of its better camera, screen, size, or battery life - had to say it lol. i am just trying to give info to iphone lovers who have never had to opportunity to contemplate about what size they want.

android lovers have had to deal with this decision for years, so they might be the best people to talk to to get an idea on if you will be happy with the plus.

MEN - Download and put the cardboard cutout of the iPhone6 Plus in your front pants pocket. Yes, I know, it's geeky... In a standard pair of jeans, it doesn't work very well. You can't squat and tie your shoelaces, it doesn't fit comfortable while you sit at a desk and work...

@tang1an You can erase the memory, but the Internet will never forget.

I ordered the 4.7". I don't want to have to carry a Phablet in something like this.

V7 Premium Messenger Carrying Case for 8.1-Inch iPad mini and Tablet

And a big thanks to the Fandroid for taking time out of their day to comment on an article about iPhones.

What would be more interesting is the percentage of those who buy the 6 plus actually keeping versus returning after they truly discover what they've gotten themselves into. Girls can get away with larger phones, most have purses. Guys on the hand, their front pockets are only so large (especially skinny jeans). Are guys gonna start carrying their large phones in their back pockets, or even man-purses?

@tang1an! I spit my coffee reading your comment about Tim and Bobo... that was a weird moment! I can never unsee that

Easy solution: I bought the Samsung S5 for $99, which compares closely to the iPhone 6+ in size and features.

People have been jonesing for a big iPhone for years as they have acquired phone envy from all of their friends with big androids.(insert your own joke). So is it really a shocker when Apple finally makes two bigger phones that the big one is the one that most people want?I just wish they would come out with an app that would erase the memory of that awkward sexual encounter that Tim Cook and Bono shared at that embarrassing as hell Apple event.
