dealpad: The bed.

Published
As I said in last week's post, there are two things a man needs to live in an apartment: A bed and a TV. Since I've already covered the TV purchase, herein lies the tale of the bed.

What I bought: The W Bed Queen Plush Top Mattress for $627 shipped free via a now-expired 40% off coupon at W Hotels The Store. (Click here to see our archived article.) This bed is made by Simmons for W Hotels and a similar Simmons queen plush top mattress goes for about $1,300 elsewhere.

How I got it: The mattress was delivered very quickly, regardless of the fact that I had entered my billing address incorrectly. Once I got in touch with W Hotels The Store to rectify my mistake (they were friendly and helpful in their email correspondences) it was just two days before I got a call to schedule a delivery. The mattress arrived two days later from the W Hotels The Store warehouse just outside New York City. It came in a large sealed plastic bag, so it was completely clean.

The verdict: I've stayed at W Hotels a few times over the years, mostly while at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. I can vouch that this bed (1) feels just as good as the hotel's beds and (2) is indeed new and has not been soiled by skanky celebrity hijinks at the W New York - Union Square, as I had feared. Overall, at just over $600, this bed was a fantastic deal.

One last observation: Although W Hotels The Store categorizes this bed as "firm," I don't find it particularly so. But I didn't opt for box springs, so the bed lies on the floor at the moment.

Now, all I need is some sheets...
