Ever wondered what the most luxurious resorts in the world are like? This week, we're investigating TripAdvisor's top five luxury hotels to see exactly what makes these hotels the best in the world. The list includes a rainforest resort in Costa Rica, boat villas in the Maldives, a castle hotel in Prague, and more.
Not only is this newly opened hotel featured at the top of TripAdvisor's 2016 list of the world's top luxury hotels, it's also ranked #1 on Condé Nast Traveler's "Best Spas in the World: Readers' Choice Awards 2015".
Nestled in Arenal Volcano National Park, this adults-only resort features 16 villas boasting the largest guest rooms in all of Costa Rica. Plus, each villa has a private plunge pool, naturally heated by mineral springs. The resort also features three of Arenal's top-rated restaurants, including Sushi Amor, a sushi restaurant serving up delicacies like strawberries wrapped in eel.
To top it all off, the resort runs daily nature walks where you can spot wildlife unique to the rainforest surroundings like macaw parrots, sloths, and tent-making bats.
This 5-star resort is as close to being ship-wrecked on a desert island as you would ever hope to get. Each of the 2,260-square foot villa suites features open-air living rooms and overwater sundecks with steps straight down into the ocean. With free activities like sunrise yoga, windsurfing, and Hobie Cat sailing, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
And if all that isn't enough to relax you, the resort's Meera Spa offers massages on a glass top table so you can watch the tropical fish dart around right below you.
For the real royal treatment, head to Prague and stay in the sixteenth century-home of Rudolf II, the Roman Emperor and Habsburg King! This Renaissance building winds up the side of Hradčany hill at the foot of Prague Castle, allowing guests private access to the castle grounds from spring through autumn.
The hotel's restaurant, Terasa U Zlaté studně, is widely ranked in the top three restaurants in Prague, in no small part helped by the breathtaking panoramic view across the rooftops of this city.
If you have a desktop background showing little villas connected to a snake-like central boardwalk running over impossibly clear blue water, it's very possibly a picture of Cocoa Island resort. The second Maldives resort to make it onto this list, the focus here is on style.
The most unique aspect is that each of the rooms is a self-contained villa, designed to emulate the Keralan boathouses of southern India. Rooms include private sundecks, walk-in showers, and straight-to-snorkeling sea access. Take advantage of the incredible ocean access by borrowing some free snorkeling gear and heading to the local reef to see the battalions of parrotfish and manta rays.
Morocco's exotic "Red City," Marrakech has an abundance of flashy hotels and family-run "riad" inns. But La Maison Arabe has the rare gift of combining the character and history of a riad with the service and comfort of a hotel.
This hotel has been welcoming international guests since 1946, counting Winston Churchill, Queen Ingrid of Denmark, and Jackie Kennedy amongst its famous patrons. The hotel's 26 rooms are tastefully decorated in a restrained Moroccan style and most include fireplaces and private balconies.
The location is another big advantage for this hotel, as it's located just a few minutes' walk from Marrakech's famous souks and the main square, Jemaa el Fna. And if you need a retreat from the bustle of the city, the hotel operates a free shuttle to its nearby country club, equipped with lush gardens, a 27-hole golf course, and 60-foot swimming pool.
