Take Note: Your Fall Wardrobe Checklist
1) Metallics -- Spotted at: Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli, Trusardi, and Versace
Silver and bronze and gold, oh my! You've simply got to get one, or all three! There are so many different styles to choose from – for shoes there are round-toe pumps, slingbacks, and flats, and for bags, you can go deconstructed, quilted, hobo, or braided… the options are endless! Try this: Aqua Metallic Jersey Dress, $88 at Bloomingdale's.
2) Bows -- Spotted at: Chanel, Commes des Garcons, Moschino, and Etro
You gotta go bow. These beauties come in all varieties -- skinny and tied around the waist, neckties, adorning shoes, belts, and bags, or even covering an entire train of a dress. Don one of these precious knots to add a little oomph to an otherwise average outfit. It's a little girl detail that meets big girl chic. Try this: Hollywould Peep-Toe Pumps in Red, $29.99 at Target.
3) Grey – Light, Dark, or Charcoal -- Spotted at: Costume National, Giorgio Armani, Prada, Paul Smith
A multitude of designers had a love affair with grey this past season, and we don't blame them! It may not be the new black, but it sure comes close. Practically everything goes with grey – and there are so many hues to choose from! We are a fan of the darker shades for dressier occasions, and lighter shade for hoodies, tees, and the like. Of note, grey cashmere looks fantastic and is very-of-the-moment. Try this: Hayden Steel Grey Cashmere Crewneck Sweater, $89 at Bluefly.com.
4) Sleeve Jackets -- Spotted at: Yves Saint Laurent , Betsey Johnson
Designers channeled a more lady-like era when shorter jacket lengths gave way to long, elegant gloves (an accessory that would always be on hand -- no pun intended). Revive the look, but replace gloves with a long-sleeved sweater or tee underneath. A coat with a little puckering or bell-sleeved shape looks best. Try this: Ella Moss Jeanette Coat, $243 at Shopbop.com.
5) Hats -- Spotted at: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Biba, Celine, Christian Dior, and D&G
The beret is back with a vengeance, as well as your Granny's open knit, super-soft floppy hat that somewhat resembles a mushroom. From 20s-inspired to opulent and garish, from tomboyish to chic and girly -- covering up your tresses under a hat has never been so stylish! Hats popped up all over the runway this season, and we definitely took notice! Try this: Cable Knit Beanie, $7.80 at Forever 21.
6) Volume -- Spotted at: Giles Deacon, Brian Reyes, and Proenza Schouler
Whether it's a jacket, sweater, or dress, volume seems to hold court as the new silhouette for fall. Garments tend to have a high waistline to let the volume protrude out from the chest, and downward. As the fabric flares out, we love when it is draped in layers for a very soft, romantic look. Try this: ABS by Allen Schwartz Swing Dress, $71.99 at Lord & Taylor.
7) Wide Leg Pants -- Spotted at: Gianfranco Ferre, Max Mara, and Ferragamo
Don't be caught without them! From khaki to denim to houndstooth – this cut is popping up in a variety of different fabrications for very different occasions. Get a breezy "the devil may care" attitude when wearing the look. Go casual in awesome denim wide-legs, or spruce it up with lightweight, movable black or striped pants. The best part: almost every retailer, from Old Navy and the Gap to Saks Fifth Avenue has a version! Try this: Plaid Cuffed Wide Leg Pants, $69.50 at Gap.
