Stylenotes' Fragrance Picks for Summer 2008

Published
Besides having an obsession with clothes, accessories, and footwear, fragrance ranks high amongst our absolute favorite indulgences. A certain stylenotes staffer admits to having 11 fragrances in rotation, and owning over 20! With our self-proclaimed expertise and love of scents, we decided to review fragrances that have recently come out, and are perfect for the muggy, warm weather that is sure to come this season! Upon testing fragrance upon fragrance, we discovered that the trend for the season lies in fruity, citrus scents with a twist. We've narrowed the list down to our four favorite picks:

Marc Jacobs: Grapefruit Splash

$65 at Nordstrom

Out of the three limited edition 2008 splashes Marc Jacobs released (also Basil and Pear), in our humble opinion the Grapefruit is by far the most distinctive, refreshing, and yummy scent! It comes in a generous 10-ounce bottle, considered gargantuan by perfume standards, and is a light scent, meant to be sprayed all over. The fruity scent naturally includes notes of grapefruit, as well as ginger and white musk. Although the staying power only seems to be for a couple of hours, it is meant to be a light, non-overpowering spray, thus it's probably a good idea to buy a little atomizer to keep in your handbag so that you can freshen up the fragrance with another squirt later in the day!

Guerlain: Aqua Allegoria Laurier-Reglisse

$50 at Sephora

You may want to brush up on your French before attempting to pronounce the name of this fragrance, however it will definitely be worth the effort. A wonderful aromatic blend of notes that was hard for us to decipher, except for that fact that we really, really, liked it, was our first impression of the scent. Later, we discovered the unusual mixture includes liquorice, laurel, orange blossom, amber, violet, and bergamot (a personal favorite). The fragrance is sweet, without going overboard, and maintains the light and airy vibe of a summer breeze. Like the Marc Jacobs Grapefruit Splash, the scent doesn't linger all day, thus is the nature of a lighter summer scent. If you need a "touch up", keep that sample-sized portion with you and spray it on before you head out to that cocktail hour after work.

Bath & Body Works: Blushing Cherry Blossom

$19 at Bath & Body Works

For something a tinge heavier, we chose the Blushing Cherry Blossom eau de toilette. Decidedly sophisticated, but playful enough to wear during the day, we could definitely transition this scent into the colder months ahead. Notes include mandarin, fresh melon, lush berries, white jasmin, rose Juliette, musk, and soft sandalwood. If you love the scent but want a lighter version of it, try the Body Splash instead for a mere $11.

Donna Karan: Be Delicious - Charmingly Delicious

$55 at Nordstrom

A limited edition fragrance and updated version of the popular "Be Delicious", Charmingly Delicious is fresher and lighter than its counterpart, with an addition of an exclusive American apple note. We love the bottle design, which is more lighthearted and casual, adorned with an apple cell phone charm. This citrus scent is full of high-spirited fun, and spunkiness -- it definitely would not be mistaken for your Mother's perfume!

Now that you've been briefed on the latest and greatest fragrance offerings for summer 2008, there's only one hard decision left to make: which one are you going to buy? We would go for them all!
