The reason Apple has been producing the iPad 2 for so long isn't to give consumers a lower-priced option; it's to serve the business market. Businesses want hardware that's available for a relatively long time so they can simply replace hardware that kicks the bucket rather than have to go through the hassle of modifying the rest of their IT environment to accommodate a newer (i.e., different) machine.
