Give Your Car Some Personality with These Accessory Deals

By Tom Barlow, dealnews contributor

Is your gray sedan indistinguishable from every other gray sedan? Chances are, your personality isn't gray; it's as colorful as a Bolivian market and as bright as the sun.

So why hide yourself inside a car with all the pizzazz of a raincloud? There's a whole industry turning out accessories that can turn that piece of generic machinery into a space that reflects just who you are.

And although the options are endless, here are eight items we've hand-selected to liven your day-to-day commute.

1. Floor Mats
Do you wear flip-flops any day that there isn't snow on the ground? Then you'll love this Giant Black Flip Flop–Style Molded Utility Mat ($8.04 with free shipping via Prime, a low by $6). They'll also help keep your ride from accumulating sand from all those beaches you frequent.

2. Hitch Plug
Are you a superhero fan? (We all are apparently, given that a new feature film about one debuts nearly every week.) Perhaps you would like to show off your enthusiasm with the Superman "S" Logo Brushed Aluminum Hitch Plug ($22.15 with free shipping via Prime, a low by $7), which covers the hitch connector on the back of a truck or trailer. Up, up, and ... down the road!

3. Antenna Topper
Do you occasionally lose your car or truck in a vast parking lot? Then you, my friend, need an antenna topper. But why settle for the typical neon tennis ball when there are so many custom antenna toppers on the market? A couple of our favorites: For the agricultural fan, the John Deere Tractor Antenna Topper ($5 with $2.25 s&h, a low by $6) will tell the world you prefer living large in your bib overalls. Or, try something sporty, like this Detroit Lions Antenna Topper ($8.47 with free shipping via Prime, a low by $2). Amazon also has a large selection of toppers.

4. Shift Knob
Are you a gun devotee? Do you have a center console shift? Then you can add a little fun to your ride with the Pilot Automotive Motorsport Manual / Automatic Shift Knob ($23.83 with free shipping via Prime, a low by $6). The shifter looks like a pistol embedded up to the trigger guard into a holster, sure to amuse your fellow aficionados.

5. Musical Air Horn
While this Wolo Star Trek Musical Air Horn Kit ($71.36 with free shipping via Prime, a low by $10) might look unsubstantial in its packaging, boy does it ever announce to everyone within earshot that you really dig the geekiest of geeky shows. This kit will turn your ride into a little Enterprise, boldly going where no-one has gone before (between the green Fiesta and the blue-hair driving his Crown Vic at 25 mph on the freeway).

6. Personalized Bobblehead
These bouncy dashboard dolls can be an amusing addition to a boring commute, and if the standard TV and cartoon characters aren't impressing you, consider getting a personalized bobblehead. You too can be like Dwight from The Office with a Groupon credit for a Custom Bobblehead from The Bobblehead ($150 with free shipping, $210 off). While this particular sale has sold out, these offers frequently return; set up an email alert so you know right away when a credit is listed.

7. Electric Cooler / Warmer
Nothing beats a frosty drink while on a long drive, and this Koolatron P-27 32-Quart Kool Kaddy Electric Cooler/Warmer ($101.99 with $2.95 s&h, a low by $15) uses the current from your 12-volt outlet to keep your Cokes (and food) chilled. It's also an excellent addition to any tailgating excursion.

8. Heated seat cushions
Allow yourself to enjoy all these customizations with the Wagan 9738 Heated Seat Cushion ($15.54 with 97 cents s&h, a low by $3). It plugs into the 12-volt outlet on your dash and brings a welcome warmth to your derriere that will cut down on one of the many hardships of a cold northern winter.

These are terrible ideas, and I hope nobody goes out to waste money on such useless items for the car. Dealnews, I expected better from you when picking these articles to publish.
