Girl Tech: Where Fashion Meets Function

Published
When it comes to tech, it often seems that the element of fashion is missing. Cameras are silver, and TVs are black, with nary a print or burst of color to be seen. We've searched high and low for what we call "Girl Tech" -- gadgetry for the girls -– a new take on products that meet our standards of quality and style. From custom products to innovative new technology and smaller sized items such as cell phone and cameras that fit into our clutch handbag, we've got our bases covered. For our first installment of Girl Tech, we've come across technology-related products to keep you looking chic while listening to your itunes, working, or while in transit.

Our selections include:

Headphones

Ditch those white earbuds (that are probably starting to look a bit dingy by now anyways), and go for a little ear bling via the Active Crystals Headphones by Philips and Swarovski . They possess a sleek, stainless steel body and woven, bungee-like wire but the highlight is definitely the faceted dome-cut silver shade crystals that stick outside of your ear. Prices range fro about $80-$120, however we like the Icon Headphones for $80 just fine. They're surprisingly light weight and the earpiece is wrapped in a transparent silicone that actually is quite comfortable (we tend to have "chronic earphone pain" in our ears from using headphones too much).

Speakers

Sometimes when you need to have your mp3 player play out loud, there isn't always a computer nearby. In this instance, portable speakers come in handy, and its especially great when they kill two birds with one stone – functional and fashionable. We love the Neo Speakers in the Violet Trees print from Fashionation ($14.95)– they fold flat making it easy to travel and store them, and are also equipped with this chic splatter tree print. The speakers come in different colors and prints, as well as a square shape. And, as an extra bonus, they are made from recycled materials.

Computer

We hate constantly lugging our laptop all over the place and always having sore arms and shoulders from the process. The solution? Something smaller and lighter, of course! The Asus Eee 2G Surf 7" Micro Laptop PC, $299 shipped from Amazon.com is tiny – the screen is only seven inches but this little guy holds a 800 MHz Intel Mobile CPU and pre-installed Linux operating system (which is like having Windows XP). We don't think that it could hold thousands of your mp3 and photo files and still run like a dream, but it will definitely do as a good, basic computer to port around with you. And, did we mention the color possibilities? We absolutely adore the sky blue, but also think the blush pink and lush green are equally chic.

Computer Sleeve

Carrying around your laptop doesn't have to be boring – add a little color and whimsy to your routine with these Poppy Neoprene Laptop Sleeves, available in tangerine or lime for $34 at Uncommon Goods. These sleeves fit most laptops with monitors up to 14", which means you should take the measurements of your laptop's length, width, height, and diagonal measurements. Since we mentioned before we like our products to have highly functional, and not just fashionable characteristics, the sleeve is water resistant, shock absorbent, durable, and washable by hand. So go ahead, back it in your carry-on and don't worry about a thing.

We hope you've enjoyed our sampling of tech-related products that don't have "dude" spelled all over them -- stay tuned for the next edition of Girl Tech!
