Get the Look: Kate Moss

Published
Kate Moss has always been shrouded in controversy, whether its her slight build or her "recreational" activities, but women world-wide can't seem to get enough of her rock-star's-girlfriend attire. The model can be casual in cutoffs and a tank, or she can turn up the glamour wattage with slinky, luxurious evening silhouettes. Regardless, there are few people who lay claim to effortless cool like Kate Moss does.

Last spring, Kate introduced her first clothing line with Topshop, a hugely popular clothing store in the UK, and people waited in line for hours to get first dibs on the hip model's signature styles. She recently premiered her holiday line, full of evening frocks befitting an edgy romantic, with boleros, sequins, lace, silk, and corsets galore.

Sadly we don't have a Topshop in the United States. We do, however, have Barneys, which has the exclusive rights to Moss' wares. While not all her designs are available, Barney's makes it that much easier for the American girl to emulate Kate.

She is perhaps best known for her constant hipper-than-thou casual look, and luckily this style lends itself well to mixing and matching. First, start with Moss' own Muscle Back Tank for $9 at Barneys. The tank is deceptive; it seems strikingly similar to a Hanes undershirt. But it's all about the cut. The neckline is far more flattering and sexy. Should the climate demand more coverage, however, try this Baby Rib Long Sleeve Tee in Crème for $21 at American Apparel.

As would befit a rock star's girlfriend (she's already moved on to Jamie Hince of the Kills, after breaking up with Pete Dougherty), Kate is known to wear vests and silk scarves that are more troubadour than Chanel. Pair this Lux Halter Vest for $48 with this Gemma G Stay Gold Scarf for $38 (both Urban Outfitters). Be sure to tie the latter in a loose knot just above your breastbone like Kate, as this sets her apart from all the other scarf-wearing celebs.

Kate often wears skinny jeans, and while she makes her own version for Topshop, you can find far cheaper options. Try these Levi's 545 Skinny Jeans at JCPenney for just $34.99. They're less money and even slightly more forgiving – we're not all super models, after all. Top the look off with a pair of sleek aviators (Ray-Ban Inspired Aviator Sunglasses, $10 at CelebShades.com). For an evening update to this outfit, toss a sparkly bolero over your shoulders, like the one she sported at the launch of her holiday line. This Sequin Top from Forever 21 for $19.80 does the job nicely.

Though it may look effortless, Kate's style is carefully chosen to look that way. They may be unassuming – an undershirt, slim jeans -- but it's the subtle details that make them ultra-flattering without trying too hard. It's the difference between bed head and fashionably disheveled. We all know which we'd prefer to be.
