Get the Look: Gossip Girl

This week we'll be analyzing the style of Gossip Girl -- or rather, two girls: Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester) and Serena van der Woodsen (played by Blake Lively). Whether you actually watch the often-outrageous show or believe in its plot turns, you can't deny that the fashion of these two young women is sublime. Blair is the epitome of polished chic; she's the sort of girl who has an outfit for every possible activity, including ice-skating (which consists of a plaid mini skirt and matching cape). Serena is the more trendy of the two, wearing of-the-moment shapes (like the trapeze dress) and accessories under her cascading head of blond hair. While both fabulous, the two girls exhibit very different style.

To demonstrate their individual fashions, we'll first discuss their choice of bags. Serena, the wild child of the two, carries a large, soft hobo (no structure!) adorned with studs. While it's not technically a hobo, we love this Studded Satchel for $38 at Rampage. On the other hand, nothing short of Chanel is good enough for Blair Waldorf. Though she daintily wears on her wrist the traditional quilted purse with a chain link strap, anything Chanel will do. That's why we think, if Blair were on a budget, she'd approve of this Embassy Quilted Evening Bag for just $17.45 at Amazon.com.

When they're not off gallivanting around New York, these Gossip Girls actually go to school where their style exudes even through supposed uniforms. Serena, being the enfant terrible she is, jauntily ties her neck scarf and pairs it with a deeeeep cut sweater vest and boots. Of course, the school makes her wear the super short skirt. Keep this Unisex Solid Rib Vest ($36, American Apparel) unbuttoned to your navel and loosely tie a Gemma G Stay Gold Scarf ($29.99, Urban Outfitters) around your neck.

We love Blair's take on the school uniform in this picture: it's polished and classic, and yet very youthful and chic. She's always wearing a headband and Alice in Wonderland-esque tights, but she's neither sweet nor naive. Try this thin Isaac Mizrahi for Target Grosgrain Headband for $9.99 or just a simple ribbon will do. Then pull on these Perfection Footed Tights for $5 at Walgreens. Add this Striped Short-sleeve Shirt ($16.99, La Redoute) and this Ribbed Solid Tie in Navy ($19.98, Jos A. Bank) to complete the look.

Outside the classroom, we think Serena is best embodied by a spangled trapeze dress and Blair by this fiercely chic cape. To capture these looks, try an Alexia Admor Black Sequined Sateen Neck Trapeze Dress ($156, Bluefly.com) or a Cejon Cejon Wool-Blend Cape ($148, Cejon Bloomingdale's). While Blair's cape is a bit shorter, we think this Cejon one evokes the same upper-class glamour.
