DealWatch: Price trends on Blu-ray players

Published
It's been a little over a year since Blu-ray put HD DVD out of its misery. However, despite their triumph, Blu-ray disc players have yet to fully penetrate the home theater market. High prices, standard definition DVDs, and digital download services have made it difficult for consumers to adopt to Blu-ray. Nevertheless, deals on standalone Blu-ray players have become frequent enough that you can easily purchase a Blu-ray player for under $200. We examined the past year's deals (excluding refurbs) to see if now is the right time to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon.

Verdict
Although prices on Blu-ray players plummeted during the holidays, they rose sharply in February and are staying higher. Thus, now is not the time to buy. We recommend waiting for the next sub-$150 deal. (Also consider a pricier deal if it comes bundled with Blu-ray movies you want.) When searching for deals, you'll find models from Sony, Samsung, Memorex, and Sylvania, which were the most heavily discounted brands. Click here to see the latest deals on all Blu-ray players.

Shipping prices (when applicable) were factored into the pricing in our data. This data is based on deals listed on dealnews.com, which represent low points, not averages.
