Barneys Warehouse Will Now Accept Returns

The luxury outlet was one of the few stores that was entirely final sale. But now that's changed, at least for some categories.

Barneys Warehouse sale

Barneys Warehouse long held a policy that all sales were final, with no exceptions. It's rare to see a retailer these days that doesn't have some form of a return policy, so it's good news for shoppers to see Barneys instituting policies like those of Neiman Marcus Last Call and other outlets by offering returns on apparel items — with a few catches.

Clothing Items are Eligible, but Not Clearance

The discount outlet is now accepting returns of men's and women's clothing within thirty days of purchase, with some exceptions. Clearance clothing and swimwear aren't eligible for its new return policy.

It should also be noted that eligible returns are taken with a return fee of $9.95, which is deducted from the original form of payment once the return is processed. While items purchased from stores and online can both be returned, an item purchased online can't be returned in-store. Right now, the returns policy only applies to men's and women's clothing, so don't expect to return accessories or a pair of ill-fitting shoes.

A Move to Improve the Shopping Experience

"As the business has grown online we now see returns as an opportunity to improve experience and customer's confidence to shop with us on Warehouse," Matthew Woolsey, a Barneys New York executive vice president, said in a statement to Racked.

Were your purchases and returns from Barneys, or Barneys Warehouse? Barneys has always accepted returns, it's Barneys Warehouse (their outlet store) that is initiating the new policy.

For what it's worth, I have purchased from Barney's a number of times. The one time I had an issue with my purchase, they very graciously returned my money with no problems and no restocking fees. Not sure if they have/had some kind of 'unwritten' return policy under certain circumstances, but I needed to return an item (for a gift) which did not match the color of what I had ordered and was pictured. I was polite when I called, told them understood their formal return policy, but I was hoping they might make an exception under the circumstances, and they did. No arguing, no real complaining, and no problem. I would have happily exchanged what I ordered for the right color, but that wasn't an option, and they gave me my money back.
