How do I make my shoes more comfortable?

You may think you have to sacrifice comfort for style, but there are a few ways that you can have both!

1. Break your shoes in before wearing them for extended periods of time.

A great way to avoid future discomfort is to break your shoes in little by little. Wear the shoes around the house for an hour or so at a time, and note any areas of discomfort. You can then place padding or use a stretcher in the right areas.

2. Consider using inserts.

Inserts or insoles will add an extra layer of padding to your shoes, making them more comfortable. Since most shoes don’t have a lot of arch support, you may want to consider adding some. There are inserts specifically created for the types of shoes you’re wearing — heels, hiking boots, dress shoes, etc.

3. Buy the correct size shoe.

When measuring your foot, measure length from longest toe to heel, and width at the widest part of the foot (typically the ball). It’s best to size up if you’re between sizes.

Orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts. Being custom makes them a bit more pricey, but for many, this increase in price is worth it. Orthotics can be used to correct underlying issues like plantar fasciitis, too. It’s also worth noting that orthotics tend to last longer than inserts.

How do I wash my activewear?

No one wants to be that person at the gym. You don’t have to be when you follow these simple rules :

1. Wash your activewear after each use.

When sweat is broken down by different bacteria, an odor is created . This odor sticks to your clothes. If you don’t wash your clothes after working out, it’ll only get worse. On top of that, if your clothes are still damp with sweat when you toss them into the hamper, you risk mildew.

2. Before using the washing machine, rinse and soak clothes in white distilled vinegar.

Distilled vinegar has been shown to break through the residue left behind from sweat and oils. When you rinse or soak your clothes in a vinegar pre-wash, you’ll have prepped the wash with deodorized clothing.

3. Unless otherwise noted, use cold water with an unscented detergent.

When washing, keep your load small to avoid too much wear and tear on your clothes. Turn clothes inside out and wash on a gentle cycle.

4. Air dry activewear once it’s washed.

The fabric for activewear tends to be stretchy, and/or have moisture-wicking treatment, so it’s best to forgo the clothes dryer and hang clothes to dry.

How do I remove a tomato sauce stain?

Tomato sauce stains can be tricky, but they don’t have to ruin your wardrobe. Follow these simple steps :

1. Remove excess sauce.

Using a tool like a spoon, scrape the sauce off the fabric to avoid staining additional areas. Dab, don’t rub.

2. Remove oily stains with dish soap.

If the sauce contains oil (like spaghetti sauce with meat), treat the oil stain with mild dish soap.

3. Run under cold water.

Rinse the stain under cold water through the back of the stain, so you push the stain out of the fabric. Once the water is running clear, move to the next step.

4. Apply detergent.

Gently rub liquid detergent on the stain in a circular motion, beginning on the outside of the stain and working inward. Let the fabric sit for 10 minutes and rinse. If the stain is still present after rinsing, reapply detergent. For white garments, you can apply a bleaching agent.

5. Machine wash and dry.

Wash fabric as normally prescribed by the manufacturer. Check the stain before machine drying — if it is still present, DO NOT machine dry. Allow to air dry and reapply stain remover.
