Men’s Quick Closet Buying Guide
Whether you’re opting for a minimalist wardrobe , or just checking off the basics, there are a few pieces each man’s wardrobe should contain:
1. Jeans
Most men already have at least one pair of jeans in their wardrobe, but it’s good to be sure that you have a nice pair of jeans to wear out. Dark washes tend to look dressier, but having one pair of each standard wash (dark, medium, or light) is a good move.
2. Trousers
Whether you work at a job that requires trousers or not, it’s a smart choice to keep at least one pair of khakis or slacks in your closet — bonus points for having those trousers tailored!
3. Dress Shirts
To literally and figuratively top it all off, dress shirts are a must in a man’s wardrobe. You can dress it up with slacks and a tie, or dress down in jeans. It’s best to first fill out your selection with solid colors (white being an essential), and then add patterned shirts.
4. Leather Belt
Whether it’s for utility or fashion, a good leather belt should be found in every man’s closet. It’s best to have at least one black and one brown.
5. Sport Coat
Sport coats may be the equivalent to a woman’s little black dress, in the way that you can dress it up or down. Men’s Wearhouse has a great fit guide to help you pick out the best style for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for my leather handbags?
In order to prolong the life of your leather handbag (and to keep it looking as close to new as possible), it is recommended that you take these steps to care for it:
- Follow any instructions provided by your supplier.
- Moisturize your handbag as needed with a leather conditioner.
- Keep your handbag out of prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, heat, or rain.
- When you’re not using it, stuff your handbag with paper to help maintain shape.
- Remove any stains promptly. As with all stain removal, it’s important to know what kind of stain you’re treating in order to use the correct removing agent:
Tips
- Food or blood stains can often be cleaned with chalk powder.
- Oil or grease stains can be removed with baking soda or cornstarch.
- Ink stains may be removed with rubbing alcohol — but use caution, as alcohol can dry or damage leather.
What are polarized sunglasses?
Polarized sunglasses use a special lens technology that reduces glare from still or glassy surfaces like water, or shine from a car. This makes these types of sunglasses a great purchase for commuters or those who find themselves out on the water frequently.
How do I find the right size clothes?
When shopping for clothes online, it’s often hard to make sure you’re purchasing the right size because of the variance between brands. The best way to ensure you get a good fit is to take measurements .
-
When measuring for men’s clothing , measurements should be taken for:
- Tops - neck, shoulder width, chest, waist, hips, arm length, and torso length
- Pants - waist, hips, length between waist and ankles, thigh, inseam, and rise
-
When measuring for women’s clothing , measurements should be taken for:
- Tops - bust, waist, hips, arm length, and torso length
- Pants - waist, hips, and inseam
Once you have these measurements, you can compare them against sizing guides provided by each brand; they’re often found on the page of the product you’re shopping.
An additional option is to utilize the True Fit tool that many brands now offer, which compares your measurements or size and fit against the brand you’re shopping.
How do I make my shoes more comfortable?
You may think you have to sacrifice comfort for style, but there are a few ways that you can have both!
1. Break your shoes in before wearing them for extended periods of time.
A great way to avoid future discomfort is to break your shoes in little by little. Wear the shoes around the house for an hour or so at a time, and note any areas of discomfort. You can then place padding or use a stretcher in the right areas.
2. Consider using inserts.
Inserts or insoles will add an extra layer of padding to your shoes, making them more comfortable. Since most shoes don’t have a lot of arch support, you may want to consider adding some. There are inserts specifically created for the types of shoes you’re wearing — heels, hiking boots, dress shoes, etc.
3. Buy the correct size shoe.
Sometimes the solution to the issue of shoe discomfort is simply purchasing a more appropriate size. Consider measuring your foot (or having your foot measured by a shoe specialist). When measuring your foot, measure length from longest toe to heel, and width at the widest part of the foot (typically the ball). It’s best to size up if you’re between sizes.
4. If insoles do not work for you, consider orthotics.
Orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts. Being custom makes them a bit more pricey, but for many, this increase in price is worth it. Orthotics can be used to correct underlying issues like plantar fasciitis, too. It’s also worth noting that orthotics tend to last longer than inserts.
How do I wash my activewear?
No one wants to be that person at the gym. You don’t have to be when you follow these simple rules :
1. Wash your activewear after each use.
When sweat is broken down by different bacteria, an odor is created . This odor sticks to your clothes. If you don’t wash your clothes after working out, it’ll only get worse. On top of that, if your clothes are still damp with sweat when you toss them into the hamper, you risk mildew.
2. Before using the washing machine, rinse and soak clothes in white distilled vinegar.
Distilled vinegar has been shown to break through the residue left behind from sweat and oils. When you rinse or soak your clothes in a vinegar pre-wash, you’ll have prepped the wash with deodorized clothing.
3. Unless otherwise noted, use cold water with an unscented detergent.
When washing, keep your load small to avoid too much wear and tear on your clothes. Turn clothes inside out and wash on a gentle cycle.
4. Air dry activewear once it’s washed.
The fabric for activewear tends to be stretchy, and/or have moisture-wicking treatment, so it’s best to forgo the clothes dryer and hang clothes to dry.
How do I remove a tomato sauce stain?
Tomato sauce stains can be tricky, but they don’t have to ruin your wardrobe. Follow these simple steps :
1. Remove excess sauce.
Using a tool like a spoon, scrape the sauce off the fabric to avoid staining additional areas. Dab, don’t rub.
2. Remove oily stains with dish soap.
If the sauce contains oil (like spaghetti sauce with meat), treat the oil stain with mild dish soap.
3. Run under cold water.
Rinse the stain under cold water through the back of the stain, so you push the stain out of the fabric. Once the water is running clear, move to the next step.
4. Apply detergent.
Gently rub liquid detergent on the stain in a circular motion, beginning on the outside of the stain and working inward. Let the fabric sit for 10 minutes and rinse. If the stain is still present after rinsing, reapply detergent. For white garments, you can apply a bleaching agent.
5. Machine wash and dry.
Wash fabric as normally prescribed by the manufacturer. Check the stain before machine drying — if it is still present, DO NOT machine dry. Allow to air dry and reapply stain remover.
